Discovering Holistic Lyme Disease Recovery

Discovering Holistic Lyme Disease Recovery

As a physician, my journey into the world of Lyme disease began long before I was even aware of it. From the outset of my medical career in 1998, I was drawn to integrative medicine, focusing on holistic approaches like bioidentical hormone balancing, natural neurotransmitter regulation, and gut health. But it wasn't until I began seeing patients with symptoms that resembled Lyme disease that my true path in this field started to take shape.

The Onset of My Own Lyme Battle

In the early 2000s, when the IGenX lab first opened, I began testing for and diagnosing Lyme disease. However, at that time, I was cautious about antibiotic treatments and preferred to co-manage my patients' care with specialists who focused exclusively on Lyme disease. That changed dramatically in 2004 when I contracted Lyme disease myself.

My story began while camping, when I removed a tiny tick from the back of my daughter’s ear, fully aware that we were in tick territory. Two weeks later, during a patient appointment, I suddenly lost the ability to move my hand, foot, and even my tongue. Concerned that I might be having a stroke, I rushed to the hospital, but after an exhaustive workup including CT scans, echocardiograms, and various other tests, the doctors were unable to provide any answers. Two weeks later, my Lyme Western blot came back positive.

Exploring Alternative Therapies

This marked the beginning of a long and arduous journey toward recovery. Antibiotic treatments, which are often the first line of defense, were not suitable for me. The doxycycline I was prescribed caused micro-clots visible in my fingernails and severe skin reactions. Faced with such adverse effects, I made the difficult decision to discontinue antibiotics, despite the advice of many of my colleagues.

Instead, I turned to alternative therapies, including oxidative treatments, homeopathy, and nutrient therapy. This was a time before well-known herbal treatments like Byron White formulas were available, so I relied on other natural remedies. However, my progress was slow, and I quickly realized that a more comprehensive approach was necessary.

Over the next twelve years, I explored various healing modalities, from energy work and deep meditation to significant dietary changes. Although I continued to see patients, run my business, and care for my daughter, it took me over a decade to fully recover. This experience taught me invaluable lessons, which I now use to help others recover in a fraction of the time it took me.

Integrating Holistic and Modern Medicine

Today, my approach to treating Lyme disease is deeply holistic and integrative. Chronic, complex Lyme cases require the very best that integrative medicine has to offer, and that’s precisely what we’ve built at Jyzen, the multidisciplinary treatment center I co-founded.

At Jyzen, we offer a wide array of therapies, from integrative and intravenous medicine to the most advanced energetic biohacking technologies under one roof. Our team includes experts in bodywork, neuroscience, and more, all working together to reverse chronic illnesses. The patients we typically see have often been struggling with their symptoms for years, bouncing between various doctors without finding lasting relief. Many have been partially treated, with co-infections, mold exposure, or other factors overlooked.

Personalized Protocols for Every Patient

Each Lyme patient is unique, and our protocols reflect that individuality. However, certain commonalities often arise. For example, some patients are slow detoxifiers who struggle to eliminate toxins as they undergo treatment. In such cases, we begin by focusing on opening up the pathways of elimination, using liver flushes, drainage remedies, and therapies like our HOCATT infrared ozone sauna. This approach ensures that when we do start treating the pathogens, the body can effectively expel the toxins without overwhelming the patient.

Addressing Neurological and Structural Imbalances

For patients with significant neurological symptoms, such as brain fog, headaches, or neuropathic pain, we employ 19-channel qEEG brain mapping to identify and address underlying issues. These may include traumatic brain injuries or limbic system dysfunction, both of which can impede the immune response. By calming the limbic system and balancing the autonomic nervous system, we create an environment in which the body can more effectively combat infections.

Structural imbalances in the body also play a significant role in chronic Lyme disease. Pathogens often hide in areas of stagnation, where structural asymmetries and fascial adhesions create a haven for them. By addressing these issues through myofascial work, ultrasound therapy, and targeted functional exercises, we help patients realign their bodies, allowing the immune system and treatments to reach these hidden areas more effectively.

Focusing on Mitochondrial Health

Another key aspect of our approach is mitochondrial health. Mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, are crucial for energy production and overall vitality. We use therapies like red and near-infrared light therapy, intermittent hypoxic training, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to boost mitochondrial function. Intravenous NAD and other supplements further support mitochondrial health, helping patients regain their energy and resilience.

Healing the Emotional and Energetic Body

Finally, a critical yet often overlooked component of healing from Lyme disease is addressing the emotional and energetic aspects of the illness. Trauma, whether physical or emotional, is frequently stored in the body and can hinder recovery. By working with patients to identify and release these traumas, we remove significant barriers to healing. Meditation, energy work, and other practices that promote deep introspection are integral to this process.

The Path to Recovery

To anyone battling chronic Lyme disease, my advice is this: Be wary of oversimplified approaches that focus solely on physical treatment. Lyme disease is rarely just about one pathogen; it often involves co-infections, environmental toxins, and other factors that must be addressed. Moreover, healing requires attention not only to the physical body but also to the mind and spirit. Developing a practice of mindfulness and staying present can have a profound impact on your recovery.

Healing from Lyme disease is a journey, but with the right support and a comprehensive, integrative approach, it is possible to regain your health and vitality. At Jyzen, we are committed to walking this path with our patients, providing the tools and treatments they need to fully recover.
