Our Biometrics Lab uses best-in-class technologies to assess and track key health indicators. Our Full metabolic assessment starts with body composition and then leads to gathering data on your metabolism, respiratory capacity, cardiac health, and mobility. These tests provide data that enable us to put together a holistic picture of your overall health. It also provides a baseline from which we can measure change over time, allowing us to provide ongoing support as you strive to achieve your unique vision of what health and wellness means to you.

Full Metabolic Assessment: What to expect
Preparing for a Metabolic test

What to expect during a Full Metabolic assessment

A 90-minute BioMetric intake session offers a deep dive into your body's health and performance capabilities. This session combines effortless assessments of body composition, heart rate variability (HRV), and resting metabolism with no physical exertion from you. For those opting for a mobility screening, expect to perform simple movements to assess flexibility and strength, wearing comfortable workout clothes.

The Active Metabolic assessment is a short but intense exercise bout of 10-15 minutes, designed to push you to your limits and measure your body's energy utilization efficiency. Both resting and active assessments use a special mask to analyze your expired breath, providing critical insights into your metabolic rates.

This testing is a gateway to personalized wellness, enabling you to tailor your lifestyle, diet, and exercise regime to your body's unique needs. It's a compact yet comprehensive approach to understanding and enhancing your metabolic health, paving the way for optimized personal health strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a VO2 max test?

A VO2 max is a test to determine your current cardiovascular, respiratory, and endurance capacities. This test measures the amount of oxygen you can consume at high intensities. It is one of the key factors in determining longevity and life span.

The test takes about 9-15 minutes, with about a 20-30 minute prep time. You will be wearing a mask and a heart rate monitor and have your choice of a stationary bike or treadmill test. During this test, you will increase wattage or speed every minute until failure.

From this test, you can gather the VO2 max and determine your Heart Rate Zones. These zones can be used to train smarter, not harder. Knowing your specific heart rate zones will allow you to optimize your workouts, improve your endurance and strength, help you lose weight.

What is a Resting Metabolic Rate? Why is it important?

An RMR will determine how many calories you burn in a resting state. It is the number of calories that your body needs to function properly. This is also an indicator of metabolic health. During the test other data important data points are also recorded such as average Tidal Volume, Breath frequency/rate, and Resting Heart Rate. The test is 10 minutes of data collection while laying still with a mask and heart rate monitor.

It is important to keep track of your metabolic rate, not just for calorie counting but as an indicator of your metabolic health. Lifestyle factors such as increased muscle mass, improved sleep.

Do I need to be fasted? Why?

The resting metabolic test requires a fasted and non-caffeinated state of at least 5, preferably 12 hours. For the Active test, please be fasted for at least 4 hours. You do not want a full stomach when trying to reach your maximum effort. You may have some caffeine, but no large meals.

Fasting is important for an accurate measurement and standardization of testing. Food and drinks add an extra variable and have varying effects on your metabolism and these effects can last for several hours after consumption.

What type of body composition tests do you offer?

We use the Inbody which is a Bio-electrical impedance scale (BIA). It will send a small electrical current (not perceivable) through the body to estimate body fat, intra- and extra- cellular water (indicator of inflammation), and Visceral fat assessment. Each report will compare and track multiple assessments over time.

The skin fold calipers are a highly valid assessment where your instructor will mark 7 points along the right side of the body. Pinching each point twice for validity and accuracy then using specific calculations to determine your body fat percentage.

How long is an appointment?

A Full Metabolic Assessment is 75-90 min.
If you schedule either a VO2 max or Resting metabolic test it will be a 60 min appointment.
And a body composition appointment is 30 min.

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable athletic clothing. If participating in the Body composition testing please wear shorts to measure the thigh.

Women, please wear a sports bra for the torso measurements.

Why can’t I exercise 24 hours before my test?

Exercising before a metabolic test will affect the accuracy of the results. Your Respiratory Quotient (O2/CO2), the physical stress, and the depletion of energy (glycogen stores) will change your metabolism and ability to perform a maximal test.
