Anxiety has become almost epidemic in today’s world. I see it so often in my practice—people come in and tell me they don’t feel comfortable in their own skin. They’re overwhelmed by worry, always anticipating the worst-case scenario. Many are experiencing what I call “health anxiety,” constantly fearing that something is wrong with their bodies even when no clear medical issue has been diagnosed.
In conventional medicine, the go-to response is often medication. While there are times when medication is appropriate, I’ve found that there are usually deeper causes that deserve attention. At Jyzen, and throughout my career, I’ve always asked the question: Why is this happening? Because when we identify and treat the root causes of anxiety, profound healing is possible.
The Hormonal Connection
One of the first places I look is the endocrine system. Hormonal imbalances are a common but often overlooked driver of anxiety. For women, estrogen and testosterone deficiencies are frequent culprits. For men, low testosterone is incredibly common.
Adrenal fatigue is another major contributor. When your adrenal glands are depleted, your body struggles to produce enough of the hormones that help you feel grounded and balanced. As a result, it flips into adrenaline mode just to get through the day. If your anxiety tends to spike in the afternoon or evening—and you have trouble winding down for sleep—this may be a sign of adrenal depletion.
Thyroid health also plays a crucial role. You need sufficient active thyroid hormone to synthesize serotonin, one of the key neurotransmitters that regulates mood. A sluggish thyroid can leave you feeling emotionally vulnerable, anxious, and unsettled.
This is why I always recommend a comprehensive endocrine panel for patients dealing with anxiety. Correcting deficiencies in these systems can be a game-changer.
Your Brain on Anxiety
For those who’ve struggled with anxiety most of their lives, we have to consider the brain’s wiring—specifically the limbic system. Early childhood trauma, even subtle experiences of not getting core needs met, can imprint a lasting stress response in the brain.
At Jyzen, we use 19-channel EEG brain mapping to assess brain function in detail. It's not uncommon to find that someone’s limbic system is stuck in a hyper-coherent state, meaning their brain is essentially locked in fight-or-flight mode. This dysregulation can fuel chronic anxiety, but the good news is that it’s highly treatable.
With targeted brain training and neurofeedback, we help rewire those patterns and calm the nervous system. When the brain begins to shift out of survival mode, the entire body follows. Healing becomes easier—whether we’re dealing with high blood pressure, autoimmunity, digestive issues, or sleep disorders—because the autonomic nervous system governs so many of the body’s core functions.
Is It Genetic? Or Learned?
Many people assume their anxiety is genetic. “My mom was anxious. My dad was anxious. It runs in the family,” they’ll say. And yes, there can be a genetic component. For instance, some individuals inherit a slower version of the enzyme that helps shuttle tryptophan—serotonin’s precursor—across the blood-brain barrier. If that’s the case, we can often support them by supplementing with L-tryptophan or 5-HTP, helping boost serotonin production naturally.
But it’s important to recognize that familial anxiety is also often learned. Our worldview is shaped in those early impressionable years—between birth and age eight—before we’re even conscious of it. If we grew up in an environment of fear, stress, or emotional unpredictability, we may have internalized that as a baseline state.
The beauty of the human experience is that these patterns can be reprogrammed. Through meditation, psycho-spiritual work, and working with skilled practitioners, it’s possible to unearth and release old programming that no longer serves us. You can choose to live differently—even if your wiring tells you otherwise.
A Better Way Forward
If you’re struggling with anxiety, I want you to know that it’s not a life sentence—and medication isn’t your only option. By looking deeper and asking the right questions, we can uncover the underlying causes of your symptoms. Whether it’s hormonal imbalance, brain dysregulation, childhood imprints, or nutritional deficiencies, we have the tools and technology to help you heal.
At Jyzen, we take an integrative, whole-person approach that empowers you to move beyond anxiety and into a calmer, more connected state of being. Healing is possible—and it starts by getting curious about what your symptoms are trying to tell you.
